Red Deer Seniors Beating the Heat

Posted on August 4th, 2021

It has been a pretty hot summer in Alberta, so Red Deer seniors must be creative to keep cool. Here are some of our ideas:

Bower Ponds - Bower Ponds are a series of interconnected ponds and parks on the north side of the Red Deer River. There are many places where you can sit and put your feet in the water to cool off. There is also a pavilion and outdoor washrooms.

Red Deer Museum - The Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery at 4525-47a Avenue is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. You can keep your cool in there, as museums require strict temperature controls (cool) for the preservation of art.

Water Fun - The Blue Sod Farm Spray and Play at 47A Avenue and 48th Street is like a water park with splash and spray equipment. There’s no doubt that kids love this place, but seniors could have fun there, too. It’s fully accessible and has good parking, change rooms, and washrooms. Why not try something different?

Staying Home - If you’re going to stay home, placing a bowl of ice or ice water in front of a fan will make for a cool breeze. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids, and close windows and shades during the hottest part of the day. Lower floors will be cooler than upper floors. Turn off any appliances you aren’t using, including the television, as they all generate heat while operating. Don’t leave pets in cars at all, and remember that concrete is very hot for little paws during a heat wave.

These heat spells are uncomfortable, but they beat the cruel winter weather. Let’s make the best of it and enjoy our summer while it lasts.
